Almost half (48%) of those effected feel self-conscious about their appearance.
A quarter (25%) of those effected believe that there is no treatment available and they simply have to live with their skin complaint.
Research from dermatological Skincare brand La Roche-Posay to mark ‘Skin Health Month’, has found that almost two in three people in Ireland suffer with a skin complaint such dry skin, acne, psoriasis or sensitive skin. The ‘Skin Health Month’ campaign aims to change the lives of people with sensitive skin by raising awareness of skin conditions among the population and encouraging them to seek treatment. The most common skin condition reported are dry skin and eczema (52%). Women are significantly more likely to suffer with almost three in four (72%) saying that they suffer from a skin condition compared to just less than half (45%) of men. Skin complaints were most common among 18 – 24 year olds with more than four in five (85%) reporting skin concerns.
During ‘Skin health month’ which will run from March 1st – 31st, pharmacies nationwide will be offering free skin diagnosis in store. By offering a rigorous and objective skin diagnosis and tailored skincare regime, La Roche-Posay hopes to show Irish consumers that they need not suffer in silence.
When it comes to treatment, while many people (43%) believe that since finding the right products they have their skin condition under control, a quarter (25%) believe that it is something that they have to live with and almost a fifth (17%) believe that they still have to find the right skincare routine. Men are more likely to believe that they have to live with a skin condition with more than one of three (35%) believing this is the case, compared to just less than one in five women (19%).
Commenting, Janette Ryan, Education& Training Manager, La Roche-Posay, said: “Our Skin Health Month campaign aims to acknowledge the distress that the symptoms of sensitive and reactive skin can cause and also highlight the local expertise in pharmacies across the country and their commitment in finding the right solution for their customers. Many people seem to be under the impression that they need to suffer in silence, when in fact, the right skincare solution can make a huge difference to the overall health of your skin.”
When asked how their skin condition effected them beyond the physical, almost half (48%) said it makes them feel self-conscious about their appearance and more than a third (36%) said that it effects them emotionally either by causing low mood or anxiety. A further one in five (21%) worry about how factors like the weather or the environment will affect their skin. Yet when it comes to taking care of their appearance, people spend more time looking after their hair (30%) and fitness (26%) before considering their skin with under a quarter (23%) saying that it is what they prioritise.
Additional findings of the report include:
- Only a third (34%) prioritise preventative measures when seeking treatment, more than one in five (22%) are looking for ‘quick-fix’ solutions and likewise one in five (21%) are seeking a long term treatment.
- Interestingly although many consider it to be an issue more common among teenagers, acne remains common up until midlife with the levels only dropping significantly among those ages above 55 years.
- Most people who have suffered from dry skin in the past (79%) say that they still suffer from the condition on an ongoing basis with a similar proportion (75%) claiming to still suffer from irritated or intolerant skin.
- People most commonly seek skincare advice from their pharmacist or skincare advisor with a third (33%) naming them as their main source of skincare advice, they are followed closely by doctors (32%)
- More than half of men (55%) have never sought skincare advice.
- Over half (51%) of adults describe their skin as sensitive
